As Giving Tuesday, the season of giving and gratitude, draws near, we wish to reaffirm our deep commitment to community in our beloved Berkshires.
Making an Impact in the Berkshires
Supporting local organizations that form the very backbone of the Berkshires lies at the heart of our ethos. Over the years, we have proudly extended our support to non-profit organizations making a substantial impact in the Berkshires. These groups have a special focus in the areas of good health and education. Here’s a glimpse of the remarkable organizations we consider to be foundational to our community:
1.LitNet (Literacy Network)
Literacy is the key to unlocking opportunities, and LitNet is dedicated to making sure that all Berkshire County adults, both immigrant and U.S.-born, have support to set goals and meet them. They provide free, 1:1 tutors (all volunteers) who provide support in the areas of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). They also provide adult basic education, high school equivalency, and the path to citizenship.
2. Roots Rising
Roots Rising cultivates more than just vegetables; they cultivate the skills and leadership abilities of our local youth. Their programs—the teen-run Pittsfield Farmers Market, Youth Crews, and upcoming Youth Farm—not only provide fresh produce but also empower young people to become active members of our community. It’s an incredible way to promote good health and foster a sense of responsibility among our future leaders.
3. Volunteers in Medicine
Volunteers in Medicine staff comes together with more than 70 volunteer medical professionals. These staff members provide primary care, dentistry, women’s health, optometry, behavioral therapy, and more, all under one roof. Over 100 additional community members volunteer as interpreters, drivers, and receptionists. While the state subsidizes health care for the majority of Berkshire County residents, 4% of the population is uninsured, primarily because they are ineligible for government-assistance programs. This is the gap VIM seeks to cover.
4. Berkshire Immigrant Center
Our diverse community is what makes the Berkshires so special. The Berkshire Immigrant Center supports our immigrant neighbors by offering essential immigration legal services and resources. They promote a welcoming and inclusive environment that makes the Berkshires a better place for all.
Giving Tuesday: A Day to Make a Difference
While our commitment to support these organizations is a year-round promise, Giving Tuesday serves as a beautiful reminder of the importance of giving back to our community. It’s a day when people come together to support the causes they hold dear, and we couldn’t be prouder to stand alongside these incredible organizations because they are truly making a difference every day.
